The City of Melbourne has opened a new Circular Economy Precinct at Queen Victoria Market, transforming food waste into fresh opportunities.
Working with social enterprise STREAT, surplus produce is being turned into new products at the Moving Feast Kitchen and sold at the neighbouring Pantry, alongside goods from local suppliers.
The precinct also includes a café run by STREAT, where market leftovers are rescued and served as delicious meals. A three-month reuse trial is underway, introducing washable and reusable dishes, cutlery and packaging across participating outlets, helping cut single-use waste.
The precinct will also host events such as cooking classes and repair workshops, creating a space where visitors can experience practical ways to live more sustainably.
