October Boost in Household Spending Driven by Entertainment and Online Shopping

The CommBank Household Spending Insights (HSI) Index rose by 0.8% to 152.5 in October, with spending on Household Goods and Recreation leading the growth.

Australians flocked to purchase tickets for major concerts by artists like Oasis, Luke Combs, and Metallica, as well as the Melbourne F1, driving a 27% increase in ticketing services.

Spending on household goods saw a strong lift, especially through online marketplaces, hardware stores, and discount department stores. Ten out of 12 categories experienced growth, with Education and Utilities declining due to government energy rebates.

Chief Economist Stephen Halmarick noted that recent tax cuts, lower petrol prices, and utility rebates supported discretionary spending. However, he added that substantial growth is expected only with potential interest rate cuts anticipated in early 2025. The HSI Index provides valuable insights into consumer spending patterns using anonymised transaction data from millions of CommBank customers.
