Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association Welcomes $400 Million Commitment to National Right to Repair

The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) is thrilled with Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ recent announcement of a $400 million annual investment aimed at advancing the Right to Repair (R2R) across multiple industries.

Building on the landmark Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Information Sharing law of 2021, which set a new standard for automotive R2R legislation, this investment marks a significant move toward a more competitive and consumer-friendly repair landscape.

“This announcement is a tremendous boost to consumer rights, business efficiency, and national productivity,” said AAAA CEO Stuart Charity. “The Motor Vehicle Service and Repair law transformed the automotive sector by guaranteeing independent access to essential repair information, and now this federal investment will broaden those benefits. A robust Right to Repair framework increases productivity by reducing repair wait times, cutting down costs, and encouraging a dynamic marketplace that drives efficiency and innovation.”

Charity acknowledged the leadership of Professor Leanne Wiseman, Chair of the Australian Repair Network, praising her advocacy for R2R across households, medical devices, and agricultural machinery. He also highlighted the contributions of Lesley Yates, AAAA’s Director of Advocacy, who has been a key figure in promoting R2R reforms and securing high-quality, affordable repair options for Australians.

Treasurer Chalmers’ initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance productivity through collaboration with state and territory governments. On November 29, he plans to meet with state and territory counterparts to discuss critical R2R reforms, along with the adoption of international product safety standards. The anticipated reforms are projected to yield an estimated $400 million in annual productivity gains by making repairs more accessible and fostering economic growth.

AAAA remains steadfast in its commitment to expanding R2R across all sectors. “As the national leader in automotive R2R, AAAA is dedicated to supporting policies that increase productivity and promote fair competition. We look forward to partnering with the government to make Right to Repair a reality for all Australians,” concluded Charity.
